During our 6+ year journey, my husband and I realized the importance of taking time to regroup. Each year, whether we faced success or setbacks, we found it essential to take a trip or staycation to reassess and reconnect. This time allowed us to uncover several unconsidered needs for ourselves and our relationship:
Feelings of Guilt and Inadequacy
I felt immense guilt and inadequacy, even though my husband never blamed me. These trips reaffirmed that our relationship was the top priority, and while having children would be wonderful, they were not the most important thing.
The Replenishing Power of Therapy
Long-term therapy provided crucial verbal and mental support. I didn’t always prioritize therapy, but when I did, it brought physical and mental relief, helping me navigate both work and home life better.
The Impact of Isolation
Living in a “bubble” and not sharing our struggles made the journey more devastating. Opening up to friends and family revealed how many could relate, and building a supportive community was incredibly cathartic.
Struggling with Control and Perfectionism
Realizing that my fertility was out of my control was tough. I overcompensated in other areas of my life, making it hard to find joy in small moments. Accepting that I couldn’t control everything was a significant challenge.
Infertility can strain even the strongest relationships. As you and your partner manage this process, what unconsidered needs have you discovered in your relationship?
